Books Worth Reading

The Majesty of the Law

The best math book I have ever read. David Berlinski guides you through the history of calculus as he explains its concepts. You will learn how Isaac Newton invented the calculus in order to develop his laws of gravity and motion. Berlinski shows how mathematics is ultimately a very human endeavor.

FINDING DARWIN'S GOD

As both a scientist and a person of strong faith, the author explains why there does not have to be a conflict between religion and evolution. It is also interesting to note that today's massive computing capabilities are allowing engineers and scientist to create new and better designs by creating software, which can quickly cycle through millions of possible designs searching for the design which best matches the need. It appears that evolution and creation are not mutually exclusive concepts after all.

Darwin's Black Box

Michael Behe puts together an excellent argument for the existence of a creator. While he makes it clear that evolution has an important role to play, he effectively argues that it cannot be the whole story. Whether you agree with his conclusion or not, Behe's irreducible complexity argument can teach you how to but together an effective argument. You will also enjoy Behe's fascinating descriptions of biology.

D N A

James Watson, who discovered the structure of DNA with Francis Crick, wrote this excellent book on his experiences and the science of DNA as a part of the 50th Anniversary of his discovery. http://www.audible.com/adbl/store/welcome.jsp

THE GENOME WAR

This is the story of Craig Venter's challenge to the Human Genome Project. Venter and his company Celera Genomics applied the latest technology including super computers and what Venter termed a shotgun approach to assembling the human Genome. In response the government run Human Genome Project responded and as a result the human genome was sequenced years ahead of the original schedule. This book explains the race and the technology behind it. http://www.audible.com/adbl/store/welcome.jsp

entaglement

If you are into quantum weirdness, this book is for you. One of the best books around if you want to know more about the very strange world of the very small. What does quantum physics mean to cause and effect? What does non-locality mean to our perception of the universe? Does consciousness really effect the physical universe? This book will give you plenty to think about. http://www.audible.com/adbl/store/welcome.jsp

the elegant universe

Brian Greene skillfully explains the very complicated concepts of String Theory. Some think that Sting Theory could be the long sought Theory of Everything (a quantum theory of gravity). The latest version of String Theory, known as M Theory says that we live in a universe with 11 dimensions, seven of which we cannot see. Brian Greene also hosts a PBS documentary of the same name. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/

GOD's  EQUATION

Was Einstein's biggest blunder, the cosmological constant, really wrong? This book will take you through Einstein's theories of relativity, and how the math that underlies Einstein's cosmological constant might help to explain a universe, which seems to be increasing its speed of expansion. http://www.audible.com/adbl/store/welcome.jsp

THE MIND and THE BRAIN

Jeffery Schwartz explores the difficult topic of consciousness and free will. He takes the reader through numerous experiments which show that conscious beings can exercise their will to literally change the wiring of their brains. He attempts to explain how it is possible to overcome the constraints of deterministic science and explain the workings of the brain in a way which  is consistent with a universe based on "free will."

This book lives up to its name. If you love science and if you want something that will bring you up to speed in a large number of areas, this is the book. From physics to geology, from botany to micro-biology, Bryson covers an amazing number of topics. In an entertaining way he tells the stories behind the science. http://www.audible.com/adbl/store/welcome.jsp
